Just this week, it has come to my attention that Mobility Plus Operators are transporting customers to isolation wards at the hospital. Hospital staff are properly equipped to deal with these situations, but management has failed to properly protect and inform our members of the risks and dangers involved. Vehicle operators are being assaulted by customers and management does nothing to protect them. Dispatchers/Reservationists are dealing with unsanitary conditions and insect infestations in their work area. In a situation that has since been resolved, they were forced to work on substandard and uncomfortable chairs all day, while management had suitable chairs. For these reasons and others, I am running for Mobility Plus Health and Safety Representative. Too often, we have depended on the Conventional Transit Health and Safety Representatives to advocate for our needs. We need a representative that is aware of your working conditions and is not beholden to management. I believe that as your Chief Steward, I have represented you well; I would like to take this same strenuous approach in protecting your health and safety. Besides dealing with management to come up with fair and reasonable solutions to these problems, I believe that our members need better education as to their rights and the responsibility that management has to protect us.
