CAW PORT ELGIN EDUCATION
(FALL 2010)
How Port Elgin Works
The cost for a week long course for shared accommodation at Port Elgin is $900.00 per member.
Lost time is covered by the local union.
Each participant receives a $20/day per diem for incidentals.
Mileage is reimbursed @ 40cents/km as calculated on Map Quest from our local's office.
Spouses and Partners are not allowed to attend with particpants during the week long training.
50/50 Cost Share
This is a new program by National to increase learning through Port Elgin and especially helpful for those locals who do not have paid education leave (PEL) in their contract.
How it works: The local union pays for all costs up front. Once the participant has completed their training the local union submits an invoice to National for half the costs as follows:
-
Lost Wages: Up to 40hrs (Since we work on various schedules our local will cover the additional lost wages over 40hrs.)
-
Per Diem: $20/day (This is written into our bylaws in line with National's policy)
-
Mileage: 40cents/km (This also is written into our bylaws in line with National)
-
Course Fees: $900/participant (This total is based on accommodation and meals. National does not charge for the actual course itself and course materials are provided).
Mileage will be reimbursed to a maximum of $131.48. The Education and Newsletter Committee is strongly encouraging car pooling to reduce costs to our local.
Pay cheques are deposited into your account as usual by the Region.
All participants must arrive Sunday evening for a 7:00 P.M. Plenary (meeting for all participants). Dinner is from 5:30-7:00 PM. Free parking is provided at the top of the hill for all participants, but when participants arrive they may leave their vehicle outside of the administration office while registering on Sunday with the front desk Support Staff. Once they have their keys etc they can then drive the vehicle up top to the parking lot.
